Packing Tips

If there is a "trick" to travelling smart and packing light - make sure you think about:

• what to pack, avoiding the temptation of carrying around too much;
• what to pack it in, understanding what to look for in efficient & effective luggage; and
• how to pack it, particularly the management of clothing so that it does not get wrinkled and does not take up too much unnecessary space.

Please note:
- Your suitcase should not exceed the allowed airline limit per person. Remember that airlines generally charge extra for every extra kilogram. Also, there will be times when you will have to carry your own baggage – make sure that you can lift and manage it on your own.

-  Keep in mind that certain clothing items can put a crimp in your sightseeing plans. Most churches do not allow shorts or bare shoulders. On the other hand, we always suggest bringing swim gear – you never know where you may find a pool for a relaxing swim. Layered clothing is the ideal way to dress because it allows you to peel when it gets hot and throw back on if it cools down.

- A limited wardrobe can work well if you take multi-functional clothing which means you have a greater combination of clothes and less individual items. Select drip-dry fabrics (which are easy to wash and dry quickly) in colours that you can mix and match throughout the trip. You could consider taking a small bag of washing powder so you can give a few clothing items a bit of a wash.

- Most importantly, bring clothes that make you feel comfortable. There will be lots of travelling, walking and outdoor activities so take sporty trousers, sweaters and shirts.  For evening outings feel free to bring a couple of dressy items in case you want to appear less casual (a black top/bottom and basic accessories usually work wonders – and do not take up a lot of space).

- You will discover that Europe is very different from Australia – one of the first reminders will be the general lack of washcloths and tea/coffee making facilities in your accommodation. If you cannot live without these items – take them with you...

- Europe's electrical system is different from Australia in two ways: the voltage of the current, and the shape of the plug. For a relatively short trip to Europe, the small voltage difference will make minimal difference to your gadgets so do not worry about buying a converter. Do consider however, buying an adaptor in Australia for continental European outlets (which take two small, round prongs). You will be relieved that all the places on the tour use the same plug – but not all European electrical stores will have Australian adaptors.

Mobile communications become very expensive when you travel overseas. Before you pack your phone and charger, make sure you consult your provider on international rates and line possibilities. There are numerous offers and deals around the globe. The countries you will be travelling to, for how long and the extent you need to be contactable will influence the type of mobile package you chose.

- Choice of suitcase will also play an important role in your packing. Check allowed airline dimensions, weight and the actual type of case; colour and material are personal preferences. Make sure you add a little personal touch to your belongings such as a bow, ribbon or tag (especially if you own a black bag) to differentiate it from the others AND clearly print your name and address (if you are borrowing a bag it is wise to have your own contact details on it).

-  Think carefully about your choice of hand luggage. Apart from meeting airline carry-on requirements, it should also be a useful asset to you overseas. Generally, we suggest light, waterproof back packs that will fit the most important everyday essentials such as water bottle, guide book, snacks, tissues, rain gear, map, pen, note pad, medication etc. Your valuable possessions such as money and documents should be kept in a separate place such as money belt or purse close to your body (and ideally out of sight).
